Tales from - Get Hooked - Crochet Classes for Beginners - Lesson #4

All I can really and truly say here, for all the work that my pupils brought into their classes today is a great big fat huge WOW!

My first pupil brought in these amazing Granny Squares - yes they are a simply plain square, but by using a multi colour wool some of the squares have the illusion of being made with colour changes!  Well done VM - all she has to do now is to decide the order in which the squares are joined and which method to use the join the squares!!

Next is work by JB - she not only made one but two mobile phone covers to practice working without a seem, as you would with a hat, but with a turning chain.....

She also bought some crochet cotton and made these fantastic pieces - as you can see, she's gone full steam ahead and done some colour changes without having been taught!

And last but by no means least is LW

LW brought these beautiful plain granny squares in to proudly show me and proud she should be!  They are in a beautiful pastel green, which may not show clearly on the photo and she will add some more pastel colours to these to create a blanket.

During the lesson we made a Treble Crochet round and she quickly picked up the logistics to how these are created.  Here is her class creation which she plans to add to at home after a trip the local craft shop to buy some more wool!

Well done to you all - you have all shown a true flair for crochet after only a few lessons!

Tales from - Get Hooked - Crochet Classes for Beginners - Lesson #2 & #3

Wow, is all I can say - I am so impressed with my pupils so far that I have to share their homework practice with you all and give you an update on what happens next in Lesson #2.

Lets start with LW who comes to individual tuition classes - in Lesson #1 she learnt the foundation chain, single crochet and double crochet.  Her homework was to work a double crochet block and she turned up with these pieces......

Don't they look FANTASTIC!! In lesson #2 she progressed to learning Treble Crochet and we even started on a plain Granny Square.  She went home armed with a plain Granny Square tutorial sheet (so she can learn to ready a pattern at the same time) and I am confident that she will come back next week with 3 or even 4 Granny Squares to show me!!

Group Class now and it's Lesson #3.  Last week they went away with the Plain Granny Tutorial sheet and one pupil brought in these.....

What can I say - Gold Star or what???  So this week Miss Gold Star went on to mastering the art of a plain flat round in double crochet - after a few attempts and turning out some rather nice hexagons, she got the counting right and made flat round!!

One of the other girls in the class also did VERY well on her Granny Square but hadn't quite got the concept of it all, so struggled a little, however by the end of this class, she became more familiar with (A) reading the pattern and (B) getting the 3 lots of trebles into the right chain space!!  I am sure that by the time she comes back next week she will have mastered it!  "The Penny will Drop" as the saying goes.

Another Lady "D" who is a week behind the others brought in these blocks - a great attempt for her first homework, although she didn't realise she was working into the front chain only of the previous round, not the  front & back chain (that's another lesson!!) However we have that sorted now.

It's me, I'm back!

Hello everyone, sorry I have not posted for a few days, but I can assure you that I have been busy.

Since the weekend I have made another good start at the allotment http://www.alithefrog.blogspot.com/ and I have been crocheting too!

I did spend a lot of time joining this weekend, as I am now on to 9 squares by 9 squares so I thought I better knuckle down and get that job done.

I have also ordered another book on Crochet Flowers & I went shopping - yes I know - shock horror, I actually got in a car, got driven to Croydon and physically went into M&S to spend some of my £135 worth of vouchers!

So, I have been a busy bee.....

I am now trying to make a few "blocks" as mentioned in my last post...

However I cant' resist the round and rounds...

Or the Granny's

and Granny's are so easy to whizz up....

However sometimes you need a challenge!

and they do say that variety is the spice of life!

Biting off more than I can chew?

Yes, I am at it again.  Crocheting squares.  Not only that but I am scouring the internet for different square patterns.

I came across this one and thought "OK I'll give it a go," so here it is.....

Considering that I was following and American pattern, so their DC's are our TC's and I had to teach myself how to stitch a double treble crochet in the midst of it all, I am quite pleased with the end result. 

It can get confusing reading DC and having to make a TC, and the pattern did get a little complicated at times.  When that happens I down tools, walk away for 5 minutes and come back until the penny drops!

 I also had to do my own finishing row, as the original pattern was that little bit to small compared to my finished squares, so I added a row of "V" stitches (2 trebles into one stitch)

Finally, this is a square that I have made up.  I fancied something stripey.  So I crocheted a foundation chain of 29 and put 1 treble into chain 5, then another TC into each of the next 2 chains 1 chain.  then 3 trebles into next 3 chains 1 chain to end.  Changed colour, 5 chains - start again.  The ends are a bit messy, so on my next attempt I will improve that, but as they will be sown into anyway, I just carried on with this one.  Only 2 rows to go - one in beige and one in brown!
